Match Today & Picture Day on January 23rd

Here are directions to the match today being held at Louisa Middle School.

Also, wrestling team & individual pictures will be held during practice on Wednesday, January 23rd. Picture forms will go home on Monday, January 14th, and can be turned in to Coach Brightwell at any time.

CLARIFICATION FOR WRESTLING FIELD TRIP: We will be taking a school bus to the VMI wrestling match in Lexington. Also, wrestlers will not have to pay an admission fee, but adults chaperoning will need to pay $5.

Important Updates!

Sorry it’s been a while; here are some very important things happening in the next couple weeks:

– Thursday, January 10: match against Locust Grove & Fork Union Military Academy. Click here for directions to Locust Grove Middle School.

– Friday, January 11: Our Friday league match this week is being held at Louisa, not Collegiate.

FIELD TRIP TO SEE A COLLEGE WRESTLING MATCH

On Saturday, January 19, we will be taking a field trip to see a college wrestling match. After looking at various schedules and colleges with NCAA teams, we decided to make the trip to Lexington, VA for the VMI vs Duke match.

Wrestlers need to be at CMS by 2:45pm that Saturday so that we can leave by 3pm. The meet doesn’t start until 7:30, so we will not likely be back until almost midnight.

We will eat before the meet, so pack a lunch and some snacks. Admission is $5 for the match to kids over 13, but I’m checking on that to see if we can get a deal on the admission tickets.

Middle School Recognition at High School Match Next Week

The athletic director at CHS has asked for middle school wrestlers who are interested in being recognized at the high school home match next Wednesday, January 9th.

The wrestling team was informed of this yesterday at practice. Just a heads up, the end of next week is gonna feel long because we have back-to-back away matches: a tri-meet at Locust Grove and our Friday league will be at Louisa (not Collegiate).

Also, we’re looking at the possibility of an informal road trip to go see a college wrestling meet. Right now the event we’re eyeing is VMI vs. Duke in Lexington, VA. Expect a notification letter coming home with your wrestler early next week.

Recap from Collegiate; Get ready for Floyd T. Binns

The match at Collegiate went very well. There were 3 mats running in 2 different locations, so I only saw about half our team wrestle. I’ll have a tracking form for each wrestler this week for recording how they did.

We travel to Floyd T. Binns this Wednesday for a tri-meet with Prospect Heights. Please expect your wrestlers to get back later. Here are directions to the match:

– take I-95 North
– get off at Exit 130B, VA-3 West (Plank Road)
– stay on VA 3 West for 26 miles
– turn RIGHT onto Stevensburg Road (VA-663)
– stay on Stevensburg for 1.7 miles
– turn LEFT onto Greens Corner Road (VA-666)
– stay on Greens Corner for 4.3 miles
– turn LEFT onto Route 29 Business/Route 15 Business
– stay on Route 29/15 for 1.6 miles
– take a SHARP RIGHT onto North Main Street
– stay on Main St for 0.6 miles
– turn RIGHT onto Grandview Avenue
– Floyd T. Binns will be on the right after 0.2 miles

Directions to Collegiate School

Apologies for making this post a bit late; a few parents have expressed an interest in attending the meet at Collegiate and need directions.

The simplest set of (fast) directions that I can find are:

– I-95 South (toward Richmond)
– I-295 West (toward Charlottesville)
– I-64 East (toward Richmond)
– take Exit 180A, Gaskins Road (south)
– stay on Gaskins for almost 4 miles
– take a LEFT onto River Road
– stay on River Road for almost 1 mile
– turn LEFT onto North Mooreland Road
– Collegiate will be on the RIGHT after about 1/10 mile

Thanks for supporting your wrestlers!

Scrimmage this Friday @ CHS! Wrestling Clinic to follow Saturday morning.

We’ll be having our first scrimmage this week. This is a meet where we match up the wrestlers with other kids on the team and have them wrestle each other.

The main purpose of this event is for to give the kids a chance to experience what an actual match looks and feels like. This event is a combination of the CMS & CHS wrestling teams; each “team” at the match will have middle & high school wrestlers on it who will only wrestle other middle & high schoolers.

The meet will be at 6pm at Caroline High School this Friday, November 30.

Also, we will have a wrestling skills clinic for the middle school the next morning from 8-12pm.

UPDATE: The scrimmage will only be for CMS, not CHS.

General Update 2012.11.20

With only 2 days of practice this week, wrestlers are reminded to stay active over the fall break. Go for a run, do some push-ups, etc.

We handed out a fundraiser form and clothing order form for hoodies, shorts, and shirts. Coach Swanton and I have offered incentives in the past for the wrestlers who raise the most money.

The fundraiser will occur on the 27th and is a 5k run.
