General Update 2012.11.20

With only 2 days of practice this week, wrestlers are reminded to stay active over the fall break. Go for a run, do some push-ups, etc.

We handed out a fundraiser form and clothing order form for hoodies, shorts, and shirts. Coach Swanton and I have offered incentives in the past for the wrestlers who raise the most money.

The fundraiser will occur on the 27th and is a 5k run.

PRACTICE THURSDAY 11/15 IS CANCELED

Practice is canceled due to parent-teacher conferences. Wrestlers should go home and spend some time performing physical activity (pushups, jogging, etc.).

Stay tuned for info for practices Monday & Tuesday next week (depends on when activity buses are running).

Tryouts Ends Thursday, November 15th

Wrestling “tryouts” will remain open for any student wishing to join the team until Thursday, November 15. This day is the last day that students will be able to show up for practice the first time.

Beginning Monday, November 19, no new students will be allowed to join.

If your student is even considering joining the team, have them come out for 1-2 weeks and see what it’s like. If they wish to continue, then it would be a good idea to purchase shoes and headgear. If not, then at least they gave it a shot. 🙂

At this point, if your wrestler does not have a physical, they will not be allowed to stay for practice. Please use this time to get them a physical.

Any students who do not have a physical by Thursday, November 15 will not be allowed on the team.

PRACTICE STARTS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7TH!

Our first day of practice will be Wednesday, November 7th. Students who are interested in joining the team need to meet in the cafeteria after school. We will walk over to the high school. Students will need to ride the activity bus home or have a parent/guardian pick them up.

Wrestlers need to bring:
– their physical form (if they haven’t already turned it in)
– athletic gear (shorts, shirt) — NO DENIM/JEAN MATERIAL
– wrestling shoes & headgear (if they have it)
– sneakers/running shoes

Students will also fill out a parent/teacher contact form so that we have that information if needed.

At the end of practice, students will be given a “season bus pass” to allow them to get off the bus at the high school for the remainder of the season.

Have a great weekend & see you Wednesday!

Informational Meeting Today

We had an informational meeting with students who had signed up today. It didn’t seem like everyone made it, so here’s a breakdown of what we talked about.

– Grades and behavior come first; wrestling takes second place to school every time. Students who have D’s or F’s on their report card for the first marking period will not be allowed to join the team. Wrestlers are expected to set a high example for their peers both in and out of the classroom, so schoolwork and good behavior need to be taken care of.

– The first day of practice is still not set (sorry about earlier posts). Stay tuned for updates.

– Practices will be held at Caroline High School. The first day of the season, students will meet Coach Brightwell in the cafeteria and walk over. They’ll be given a bus pass that will allow them to ride over to the high school and get off the bus for practice.

EDIT:
– Students who did not sign up or attend the informational meeting are still welcome to come out for the team. Make sure you have a physical ASAP (if you had one for football, you’re good to go for the year).

What’s a physical?
Basically, it’s a form filled out by a doctor saying that you’re in adequate health to participate in school sports (1) with no restrictions, (2) with certain restrictions, or (3) that you’re not medically cleared to do school sports (can be for a variety of reasons, e.g., injury or recent surgery). Patient First or your child’s pediatrician can take care of this.

– Wrestling does not have cuts. However, if we have a large number of kids on the team, we will have a “travel team” of about 30 that we will take to away matches.

– The season schedule is posted here. Please see that for dates & times of planned events.

– Girls are encouraged to come out for the team. However, they need to be aware that they are participating in a sport that is quite intense, so be prepared for it.

– Just about all of out matches this year are away matches. Parents are encouraged to travel to see their athletes perform on the mat; please keep in mind that most schools charge admission to sporting events.

– We are participating in an informal league known as the Capital Area Middle School Wrestling League. Most of these matches will be held on Friday nights in Richmond at the Collegiate School and St. Christopher’s School (there is also one at Louisa). The matches at Collegiate and St. Christopher’s will not charge admission fees.

That’s all for now. We look forward to seeing you on the mat and in the stands!

Practice Starts Monday, November 5th!

It’s getting to be that time of year.

Practice will start on Monday, November 5th. Please make sure that your student has a physical on file with the school by then.

Wrestling sign-ups will be done on during Health in the classrooms or during PE in the locker rooms. Boys and girls are both welcome to sign up.

Eagle Wrestling 2012-2013

As of now, the season is scheduled to start in early November. Sign-ups for an informational meeting will be available through your PE/Health class beginning in October; we are not going to do an announcement for everyone who’s interested because too many kids show up just to get out of class.

But we are going to need a lot of new faces this year; we had a smaller team last year and a lot of our wrestlers were 8th graders who are now over at CHS. Even if you have no experience, you are still welcome to come out for the team!

Girls: Traditionally, wrestling has been a male-only sport. However, we encourage any girls who want to come out for the team to do so. Be warned, though — wrestling is a tough sport. I’m not trying to tell you not come out for the team, but I do want to give you a heads-up about what you’re signing up for.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN WRESTLING THIS YEAR:

– Wrestlers need to remember that they are students first, wrestlers second. If your grades aren’t looking so good at the end of the first marking period, plan on staying home and studying instead of being on the team.

This is not to discourage anyone from being on the team, but make sure your are keeping up with your homework, tests/quizzes, etc. before the season starts.

– Wrestling shoes and headgear are needed for each wrestler. Try places such as Play It Again Sports or Amazon.com to see if you can find a (used) pair for cheap; otherwise Dick’s Sporting Goods will be a good place to look as the season draws near. (If you shop online, go to the store to get fitted first so that you know what size you wear.)

– Conditioning and strength are very important and a lot of kids show up to practice on the first day without doing any training on their own. A form of cardio known as “roadwork” will be a great training tool: go for a run/jog and stop every 30-60 seconds and do pushups, squats, jumping jacks, pull-ups (if you have a bar/ledge/tree branch), etc. Try to increase the distance, speed, reps, whatever you can to make it more intense. Making something longer is not always better for cardio, but making it harder is.

– Wrestlers are strongly encouraged to bring an athletic cup. This is not mandatory, but it is strongly suggested.

– Team gear (especially for first-year wrestlers on the team) will be available for purchase once the season begins: CMS Wrestling shorts, as well as a t-shirt and/or hoodie, will be available for purchase.
